Background of the Study
Social media has become a potent force in shaping language use, driving rapid semantic shifts in Nigerian English. The digital era has introduced new communication platforms where linguistic innovation is both celebrated and challenged. Nigerian English, traditionally characterized by its unique blend of indigenous influences and colonial legacies, is now experiencing significant changes as online discourse proliferates (Uzo, 2023). Social media platforms provide spaces where users experiment with slang, acronyms, and neologisms that quickly become embedded in everyday language. These semantic shifts reflect broader social transformations, including globalization, technological advancements, and generational changes. The dynamic interplay between traditional language structures and emergent digital expressions results in a continuously evolving semantic landscape. However, these shifts can also lead to ambiguity and a loss of established meaning, posing challenges for clear communication in formal settings (Amadi, 2024). This study evaluates the extent to which social media influences have altered the semantic contours of Nigerian English, examining both the benefits and drawbacks of these linguistic transformations in contemporary society.
Statement of the Problem
The rapid evolution of Nigerian English on social media has led to notable semantic shifts that challenge traditional language norms. The infusion of digital slang and innovative expressions has enriched the language but also created inconsistencies and ambiguities in meaning (Uzo, 2023). This phenomenon poses a problem for effective communication in formal contexts, where clarity and precision are essential. Moreover, the fast-paced nature of online communication may result in the erosion of conventional semantic structures, leaving older generations and formal institutions struggling to keep pace with linguistic innovations (Amadi, 2024). The absence of regulatory frameworks for digital language use further exacerbates these issues, making it imperative to evaluate the overall impact of social media on the semantic stability of Nigerian English.
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the nature of semantic shifts in Nigerian English driven by social media.
To assess the impact of these shifts on communication in formal and informal contexts.
To propose strategies for balancing linguistic innovation with semantic clarity.
Research Questions
What are the key semantic changes in Nigerian English due to social media?
How do these changes affect clarity in formal communication?
What measures can help preserve semantic consistency amidst digital innovation?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines how social media influences are reshaping Nigerian English, offering insights into the evolving semantic landscape. The findings will inform educators, linguists, and policymakers about the challenges and opportunities presented by digital language innovations. By highlighting the balance between creative expression and communication clarity, the research contributes to developing strategies that support both linguistic evolution and effective communication (Uzo, 2023; Amadi, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to evaluating semantic shifts in Nigerian English specifically resulting from social media influences and does not cover other linguistic domains.
